This is the first time lasers have successfully levitated a nanodiamond. To force the tiny diamonds, which were 1,000 times thinner than a fingernail, to float, the scientists focused a pair of lasers toward a clear vacuum chamber and sprayed in the diamonds. The diamonds gravitated toward the light, and some eventually levitated in a stable position.

Touch Your loved Ones No Matter Where They Are With Tactilu !


Over the past decade, the world we live in has changed significantly with respect not only to the technology available but also the way we work. We are trapped in a busy world where we have no choice but rely on communication technology to keep in touch with our loved ones. Even dating has gone virtual. In other words most lovers don’t have time to spend in a real world so they exchange emails and SMS.

In the past the only way for lovers to interact was to meet in the real world. Then cell phones came to invade our and lives lovers were quick to jump on it to express their feelings. Distant relationships do lack something though. That is the sense of touch. Friends can hear each other through phone or even see each other via the net but they can’t touch each other.

Now we are entering the era of wearable technology and with that, new types of products are coming into the market. It should now be much easier to express love using the sense of touch. A new idea was born straight from a Poland design studio, Pangenerator. It is a wearable wrist that has been named Tactilu. The first wrist that allow 2 people wearing it to communicate with each other at a distance using the sense of touch.

This technology relies on the Arduino Pro mini microcontroller, a bluetooth module and a custom pcb that sends signals based on a haptic feedback. There are 2 possible ways to pair electronic bracelets. Either the users will pair their device directly via bluetooth or in a case of longer distance they can pair through the net. This is quite extreme when it comes to innovation and people are yet to get used to the concept of distant touch.

The final design of this device is still been reviewed. For now it looks more like a slightly bulky bracelet but the designers did mention that the final product will be much slimmer and comfortable.

Also, another improvement that needs to be made is a situation where the touch can be sent both ways on the same bracelet. For now there is one bracelet for sending the touch and another separate one for receiving the touch. So basically people who want to play with this toy will have to wear 2 bracelets, the emitter and the receiver.

Hopefully the product that is going to be released in the market will have both the touch and feel function and it will be much more appealing to the eye. For the meantime lovers will have to use their phones and the messenger softwares to keep in touch.

Robotic Exoskeleton


NASA is co-developing an exoskeleton that could give astronauts superhuman strength. The 26-kilogram X1 Robotic Exoskeleton fits over an astronaut's leg, has motorised joints and, for the time being, it could be used to add resistive force in microgravity, helping astronauts on the ISS exercise. In the future it could be paired with a spacesuit to provide additional force needed during surface exploration, improving balance and helping astronauts walk in a reduced gravity environment.

Transrapid has a commercially operating maglev in Shanghai. 

This Shanghai Maglev Train demonstration line, or Initial Operating Segment (IOS), has been in commercial operations since April 2004 and now operates 115 (up from 110 daily trips in 2010) daily trips that traverse the 30 km (19 mi) between the two stations in just 7 minutes, achieving a top speed of 431 km/h (268 mph), averaging 266 km/h (165 mph). On a 12 November 2003 system commissioning test run, the Shanghai maglev achieved a speed of 501 km/h (311 mph), which is its designed top cruising speed for longer intercity routes. Unlike the old Birmingham maglev technology, the Shanghai maglev is extremely fast and comes with on time – to the second – reliability of greater than 99.97%.(7-minute real time video of the maglev reaching 431 km/h in only 3 minutes)

Plans to extend the line to Shanghai South Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport on the western edge of Shanghai are presently on hold, awaiting government approval

Soft Autonomous Earthworm Robot



Earthworms creep along the ground by alternately squeezing and stretching muscles along the length of their bodies, inching forward with each wave of contractions. Snails and sea cucumbers also use this mechanism, called peristalsis, to get around, and our own gastrointestinal tracts operate by a similar action, squeezing muscles along the esophagus to push food to the stomach. 

Now researchers at MIT, Harvard University and Seoul National University have engineered a soft autonomous robot that moves via peristalsis, crawling across surfaces by contracting segments of its body, much like an earthworm. The robot, made almost entirely of soft materials, is remarkably resilient: Even when stepped upon or bludgeoned with a hammer, the robot is able to inch away, unscathed.

Sangbae Kim, the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, says such a soft robot may be useful for navigating rough terrain or squeezing through tight spaces.

The Airless Bike Tires



The Airless Bike Tires made by Britek was developed to eliminate the necessity of air in tires and to help the prevention of punctures, tube replacements, and pressure checks. The ‘Energy Return Wheel’ is a concept by Colorodo-based designer Brian Russell. 

Instead of air, it uses rubber stretched over a series of carbon nano tube reinforced composite rods to provide its cushioning. These rods can be adjusted, changing the tension of the rubber to suit different types of terrain, improves flexing and recoil cycling. With the intention of reducing weight, a 29er wheel made from carbon fiber is incorporated. Further improvements include the possibilities of implementing a thin sidewall to keep mud and trail debris out for a more consistent ride.

Scientists are working on a portable spray-on-skin that can heal severe wounds in just a few minutes. The spray mainly contains important proteins that can reprogram the injured cells to become stem cells, and back to young uniformed skin cells. So far they were able to accelerate healing process from 12 weeks to 21 days with a similar approach.

This work is inspired by “The Skin Gun” which can heal burns in a fraction of time using stem cells.
